For 80 years , we have been fully dedicated to protecting the environment – and thereby human health and quality of life. To ensure the highest level of service, we employ advanced technologies and invest significant resources in the purchase and maintenance of new equipment. In addition, our team regularly participates in specialized training programs in pest control, plant protection, oil spill and pollution response, and waste management, and we encourage innovation across all segments of our operations. Thanks to this approach, we have grown into one of the best-equipped and most professionally staffed companies in Croatia, capable of responding even to the most complex challenges in this field. Our dedication and achievements are also evidenced by our membership in international associations Marine Care Association and International Maritime Fumigation Organisation (IMFO).
Our company currently has two units and four departments. Ecological Sanitation Unit consists of Pest Control Department and Plant Protection Department, while Environmental Protection Unit consists of Oil Spill Response Department and Waste Management Department.
Dezinsekcija Rijeka was founded on 22 March 1947, primarily to provide pest control and sanitation services (disinfection, insect control, rodent control) in post-war Rijeka, the Croatian Littoral, and Istria. We started modestly, with only six employees, and over the next eight decades we continuously expanded our operations, growing into a company that today employs 140 people.
With the development of the city and its industrialization, the demand for pest control services grew, and our company expanded accordingly. Already by the end of 1960, we began to provide fumigation services for cargo in the Port of Rijeka (tobacco, coffee, peanuts, grains, etc.).
In 1970, we introduced two new services – plant protection and vegetation (weed) control, and oil spill preparedness and response. At that time, we were the only company in the region with the capacity to perform concrete operations along the Adriatic coast. It was also then that we launched our own innovation: Nuvatret, an automated continuous-flow grain disinfestation system for silos. We also purchased new equipment, including a specialized vessel for oil spill response, and moved into our own administrative building, where we remain to this day.
In 1980, we were the first company in Croatia to offer systematic preventive pest control services, with the aim of protecting the population from infectious diseases. Unlike ad-hoc pest control services, which are carried out as needed, systematic preventive measures are based on the continuous and planned implementation of activities aimed at preventing the occurrence and spreading of harmful organisms.
During the 1990s, we invested substantial resources in developing our oil spill response service. Among other things, we acquired three ECO vessels for pollution control and monitoring in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar and Istria counties, which made us the best-equipped oil spill response center on the eastern part of the Adriatic. Thanks to these efforts, we were given THE CLEAN SEAS INTERNATIONAL AWARD (Malta) in 1993.
In 1998, we established our waste management service. Along with marine waste management, we also began managing other types of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
In 2001, we obtained ISO 9000 certification, confirming that all our business processes are organized and managed in accordance with internationally recognized quality management standards, and that we continuously monitor and improve customer satisfaction.
With the beginning of the 21st century, we continued to invest in our services. We incorporated new, environmentally friendly practices and developed numerous innovations, such as "EKO-set" (2003) and "InterSUZAM" (2012). We also participated in the groundbreaking projects of Rijeka-based company Vectrino involving the use of drones for monitoring the sea surface and controlling the spread of mosquitoes, for which Vectrino received the Drone Hero Europe Award (2017).
In 2017, we marked our 70th anniversary in a newly opened facility in Kostrena – Šoići Eco Center. With the construction and outfitting of the Eco Center, we began with major investments in the development of our waste management services, and over the following years we purchased a large amount of equipment and vehicles necessary for efficient operations. We also established and equipped a mechanical workshop at the same location for maintenance purposes.
Following the dynamics of the fast-growing maritime industry, and in the effort to meet the requirements of our clients, we continuously invested in logistics, technology, and equipment for the collection of ship-generated waste. In 2020, we established a port reception facility in the area of the Port of Rijeka, in accordance with the MARPOL Convention on the Prevention of Pollution from Ships and Installations. In addition, we established collection point for animal by-products.
In 2025, we completed the construction and equipping of Šoići 2 Eco Center. It is our new facility to which we have relocated all operational services. Simultaneously with the opening of this center, which also includes a waste management facility, we introduced a waste recovery line at the existing plant.
In 2026, we continue to invest in the development of competencies, as well as in the development of sustainable and environmentally friendly processes in our work, thus contributing to environmental protection, marine conservation and the improvement of public health.
