ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION UNIT
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION UNIT covers two areas - oil spill and pollution response and waste management.
We founded the Oil Spill Response Department in 1970, its operations began with the acquisition of a specialized vessel for oil spill response – the m/v JASTOG. We soon purchased more equipment for responding to all kinds of marine pollution.
The Department developed intensively during the 1990s, when, as part of the implementation of the National Contingency Plan for Accidental Marine Pollution and based on a contract with the Republic of Croatia, we purchased three environmentally friendly vessels for monitoring and surveillance of maritime areas and for pollution response operations in the counties of Primorje-Gorski Kotar and Istria. As a result, our company became the best-equipped oil spill response center in the eastern part of the Adriatic.
Over the years of dedicated work, the Oil Spill Response Department has carried out numerous pollution remediation operations at sea and on land. The most notable interventions, as well as preventive activities within this field, relate to maritime incidents involving vessels such as the m/v MIKOLAJ REJ, m/v STELLA POLARE, m/v ELHAWI STAR, m/v SERINE, m/v UND ADRIATIC, m/v FIDELITY, m/v DEALA and others.
It should be noted that each case of marine pollution is unique and differs from one situation to another; therefore, there is no single predefined operational response program. Nevertheless, several key prerequisites are essential for any successful remediation: clearly defined response procedures for marine pollution incidents, high-quality environmental protection equipment and remediation agents, and – most importantly – skilled and qualified personnel.
Our company satisfies all three of these requirements, which positions us as a leading provider of oil spill and pollution response services in Croatia.
Following the remediation of pollution affecting marine and land areas, a certain amount of waste always remains and must be managed in accordance with all applicable regulations, without endangering human health or causing further environmental harm. Consequently, waste management gradually developed from oil spill response activities as an additional segment of business.
Waste Management Department began its operations in 1998. In the beginning, waste management was limited exclusively to waste generated after marine pollution remediation. However, with the development of the activity, we began managing other types of hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Today, we are an authorized collector, transporter, recovery operator, broker and trader in waste management, as well as an exporter/importer of waste that is not subject to the notification procedure.
